Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students do not have books to read in our classroom library. I want to give them the tools, the opportunity to flourish and become movers and shakers in the world they touch. It is like Napoleon Bonaparte said: "Show me a family of readers, and I will show you the people who move the world."
My students are the most amazing kids I know!
They come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds with a ratio of about 60% Hispanic to 40% Anglo. It is challenge and honor at the same time to have in the same class students whose only meal of the day will be the reduced price lunch they will get from the cafeteria. At the same time, I also have students that come from middle class more affluent environments. You can also see the results of the baggage they bring in. Some of my students come from a home where they are being read to, where academic achievement is quintessential blessed with a rich written and spoken language proficiency; I also have the students that are in the opposite side of the spectrum, with parents working 2 or 3 jobs, but no time to read to my kids. No matter what, our school's goal is for our students to become English/Spanish bilingual and bi-literate by the time they complete the 5th grade, using the the Gomez & Gomez Two Way Dual Language Program.
My Project
I am requesting appropriate grade level reading books, like Amelia Bedelia, some leveled readers and several non-fiction books that my students need to the highest degree. I would love to offer them a rich and well-equipped classroom library; a place where they can come and visit different worlds, different eras and different cultures. A place where is safe for them to dream, where they can become more than they ever thought possible. I believe that reading can provide that for my students. Unfortunately, I am just a beginner teacher with not enough resources to provide funds for this to happen on my own, and even though I am doing my due diligence trying to get monies from the school for this project, I do not see it happening any time soon. Please, give my students the opportunity to break the poverty and lack of education vicious cycle. Together we can put books in their hands and sow a seed of knowledge and greatness in their little minds. Help us do that.
Giving children the gift of reading is one of the greatest gifts that an educator can bestow.
I want to encourage my students into becoming voracious readers. Research says that fewer than a third of 13-year-olds were daily readers in 2007, a 14 percent decline from 20 years earlier. For 17-year-olds, the percentage of non-readers doubled over a 20 year period. I do not want my students to fall under that statistic and through your donation you can help them to have a story of success in life.
