My students need 35 soccer jerseys. No pass, no play rules are in place to insure all our boys and girls also make the grades required to succeed on and off the soccer field.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Milam Mustangs are all heart, on and off the field. While their families live below the poverty line, we are instilling the values of striving for an excellent education and a strong work ethic. We're asking for matching soccer jerseys for our multi-age school soccer team.
Our school has been tasked with "academic recovery".
Our poverty rate is nearly 100%. Our families are transient and they arrive with limited English proficiency and must make the transition to English by the time they reach fifth grade. Soccer, as it turns out, is an international language. Children of various ethnicities come together on the soccer field and celebrate diversity by working on a common goal of playing sports! Our goal is to build girls and boys with character and leadership traits; students who will choose to succeed by working hard to overcome many obstacles along the way. Our students volunteer to practice after school and on weekends, and they're led by two classroom teachers who love the sport as much as their students! There are no soccer fields nearby, so we use the grassy center of the school yard, erect temporary goals, and make it work!
My Project
Soccer is accessible to all of us, regardless of our status. It's cheap and its roots are humble. With very little experience or instruction, students can be successful on the soccer field. But watch out, because once their skills improve, so does their strategic thinking, and we care very much about that aspect of the game! In 2014-15, a small group of caring dedicated students worked hard all season to win the community soccer championship. Look at their field, look at their roots, and look at their challenges. They let nothing stop them. In order to play, they had to maintain their grades.
Shirts may seem like a supply item that has nothing to do with education, but our students care about looking the part on and off the field. They will supply their own shorts and cleats, but we want them to be recognized as a team on the field. By learning to work as individuals toward a collective goal, we are teaching our students life lessons that will serve them in every endeavor.
In 2014-15, our local school-based soccer team won the area championship.
Our school budget allows us to buy textbooks and instructional supplies, but not shirts. For the twenty or thirty children who will represent our school in an informal community of elementary school soccer teams, we want our school pride to show. We will emblazon the shirts with our school name, Milam Elementary, and will work hard to represent our neighborhood as we compete against other area soccer teams.
