My Students

The author J.K. Rowling once said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." As an eighth grade ELA teacher, it can be challenging to entice students into reading! My goal is to have every student reach one million words read by the end of the 2015-2016 school year.

Many of my students have attended our school since they were in kindergarten!

However, they are still an eclectic mix of personalities and interests. I have students who are interested in sports, creating art, participating in student government, spending time outdoors, or playing video games.

My Project

I am looking to expand my classroom library by adding high-interest, popular novels that will engage even the most reluctant readers. I'm also adding many of the sequels to novels that I already have in the classroom, such as the other books in the Maze Runner and Legend series, since students have finished those and have repeatedly asked me if I have the other novels! I am also adding more sports-related books, some historical fiction novels, and novels that are in verse form to add more variety to the selection.

When I heard about the One Million Words Challenge, I was intrigued.

Eighth graders are naturally competitive, so I thought it would be a unique way to get them reading more, both in class and on their own time. Research shows that the best way to improve students' reading levels is for them to read! If their test scores also improve, that will be great, but my main goal is to help them find "the right book!"
