Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to be able to read an entire book as part of our reading program. In order to do this, each child needs to have access to his/her own book.

My fourth grade students attend an urban school in a high poverty area.

Many of my students are labeled gifted and are extremely eager to learn. However, access to libraries and books is very limited. Spanish is the primary language in most of their homes. The state of the economy has had a negative impact on our school funds and on the families in our school neighborhood.

My Project

Reading one book aloud in our classroom provides an opportunity to have a shared reading experience for all the students. The class discussions furnish an opportunity to enrich vocabulary and comprehension while sharing ideas about friendship and life. Students love to create culminating projects based upon their shared learning. This enables students to integrate their creative and artistic ability into the reading program. As the year progresses we can build on these shared experiences. Most important of all the students have fun while reading and learning.

I love reading.

Inspiring my students to develop a lifelong love of reading is the goal of this project. Sharing one book deepens students' understanding and connection to the written word.
