Once you Learn to Read, you Will Forever be Free

My students need a book shelf that allows books to be sorted by reading level so each scholar has the ability to enjoy a book appropriate for his/her abilities.

My Students

Malcolm X said, "There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book." My students have a plethora of books to choose from, but our classroom lacks the organization to store our literature.

I teach a group of the most enthusiastic and eager fourth graders at a low-income, urban school in Ohio.

Being in a low-income, urban demographic, our school lacks many basic resources that schools take for granted every day. One thing our school lacks is a proper book organization/storage system in classrooms. Currently, we have a very small bookshelf that is overflowing with books, which students have a very difficult time browsing through to find a good book.

My Project

Our class is participating in the Read-A-Million (RAM) campaign, where all scholars will have read one million words by the end of the school year. One of our class requirements is for scholars to have a RAM book at all times. We have had a variety of books both purchased and donated to our classroom over the course of the year, but we have nowhere to store the literature! The item we are requesting for our class is a leveled book storage system. This system has three different colored bins which correspond to different reading levels and abilities. Scholars will know which color is equivalent to their current reading level. This system will allow scholars to pinpoint an appropriate selection of books to peruse without having to shuffle through the entire library. Each book will have colored dot on it so that scholars will know where to return the book, which will also help with book organization and classroom cleanliness.

"Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." Literacy is essential for children to be successful, and a love for learning will exponentially improve literacy.

Having an organizational system for books in our classroom will allow scholars to choose books that they can enjoy and grow in their love for learning and reading,
