This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach Reading to amazing 7th and 8th grade students in a Title I school near Birmingham, AL; thirty-five percent of which are English learners. Many of these students have immigrated from Central America are learning to navigate life in an unfamiliar environment.
Each of my outstanding students has a unique outlook on life and approach to learning!
They love to read about people who look like them and have similar experiences. Please help us fund this project to engage my students and enrich their reading adventures!
My Project
These books will enhance the reading experience in my classroom by including themes close to home for many of my students. It is important for students to see characters who look like them and have shared experiences in books. This also creates a platform to teach empathy for all students and open discussion on current events and problems.
Reading stories similar to their own helps students make meaningful connections with the content and engages them in deeper understanding of the world around them.
Historically, Latino students are underrepresented in adolescent literature. This book will allow my students to see themselves represented in the class material and further engage them in deeper learning experiences.
