Like Batman & Robin, technology & gardening are a "dynamic duo!" Seriously? A laptop, camera & garden can enhance a 4th grade environmental unit? How can that be? Watch how effectively my students & I can grow a garden & digitally record our "seed to table" journey! Oh yes, a dynamic duo indeed!
I am currently a 4th-grade team teacher with close to two decades of experience.
At this time, I teach Science, Social Studies and Math at a PreK-5th-grade school. My school has 535 students. I believe technology integration and hands-on experiences are a "must" in classrooms. Like me, my students are drawn toward creative technology projects. I am a firm believer in hands-on manipulative lessons. Though this lesson ties to a Science unit, many ELA, language & art objectives, standards are also meshed with this unit. Objective: The students will plant a garden, monitor progress, harvest it and then will create books using a digital camera and laptop. The process would involve what it takes to get the vegetables from seeds to the table. The students would take pictures every few days. They would chart the growth. After the vegetables are grown & the unit is complete, a book would be written and created with student notes & photos! Technology can bring a garden to life! Watch us & see!
My Project
As a technology-based teacher, I know bringing a new portable laptop/tablet, camera, and accessories to in my classroom would enhance future lessons for my students. At this point, my goal lies with combining Science, ELA skills, "Empowering Students Through Art" & hands-on activities. I would love to strategically incorporate technology tools to enhance my students' learning experiences. I teach science and have an "on site" garden at our school. My goal would be to record the photos digitally and document the results on the laptop/tablet as we plant it and watch it grow. As a culminating activity, the students would then create an online book about what it took to get the vegetables from the "seed to the table." The students would then use their own garden photographs and make group books with the pictures snapped with the digital camera. My students need a camera, laptop, mouse,& accessories for this project. Any help in completing our digital "green" journey would be appreciated!
Weekly, the groups would gather to chart & discuss the growth of their vegetables.
Photos & notes would be taken. The students would describe the progress on the computer as to what has taken place. The final step will be for students to write & compile a digital online book placed on the school website sharing the entire journey from "seed to table." I know that using technology & hands-on lessons enhances learning. This is a great combo. Would you help us with our digital gardening experience?
