Oh the Places We'd Go with an Interactive Approach!
My students need 11 headphones, MimioTeach Interactive Whiteboard, Dry Erase Boards with Markers, and other supplies for an interactive learning environment.
In Hooray for Diffendooferday by Dr. Seuss, a stanza that reads: "My teacher is Miss Bonkers, she's as bouncy as a flea. I'm not certain what she's teaching, but I'm glad she teaches me." In the end, her creativity and interactive lessons save the school. I aim to do the same with this project.
Many of my students see my classroom as the place they come to gain support, guidance, and nurturing.
I teach students with multiple types of disabilities and varying needs. Very few of them have access to technology at home, but what I've found is that very few students, including the students in a small group setting, respond to paper and pencil tasks these days.
The school has access to Digits and Springboard, but the lessons get lost of these students, because we cannot use the drag and drop components of the lessons without "smart" technology. They need interactive lessons and respond well to fast-paced lessons. These students love getting up and writing things on the board, and they love interacting with one another. I have recieved one DonorsChoose grant, and using those materials has enabled us to begin some interactive lessons already, and they really respond well to them. My students show a great capacity for gratitude, so your donation would truly be appreciated.
My Project
Oh, the places we'll go! I love interactive technology. Getting the students up to move things around on the Interactive Whiteboard and interact with the lesson will enable lessons to be more meaningful. In math class, this means showing them how to manipulate math. In language arts, we can move words around on the screen.
With individual white boards, students can give individual responses from their seats to show me what they know quickly without needing to waste paper. Providing students with headphones means that they can work from computers and listen to videos without distracting classmates (many of them lack resources to bring their own headphones to school). Multi-colored markers will allow me make things more visual on the whiteboards and highlight different concepts, putting different types of words in different colors. White chart paper, students can work in groups, creating projects and putting their ideas down on big paper.
There's a part in Hooray for Diffendooferday where the children sing, "you're gribbulous, you're grobbulous, each day we love you more.
You are the school we treasure and unceasingly adore." My hope is that not only will my children unceasingly adore school, but, like in Diffendoofer Day, they will learn so much that they soar past the expectations that people have set for them.
