My Students

My students LOVE to read books that are not in the Basal Reader! The problem is, we don't have many class sets that we can do book studies with. Having an entire class set of a book would allow students to each get to hold their own copy,which is very important to them at this age.

My students come from a Title 1, low income school that has very little funding and many more cuts in the foreseeable future.

I also have a large population of ESOL students in my reading class. My students are very excited about reading, especially when we read outside of the Basal.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of the book, Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester. In this book a very unique penguin saves the day and shows that it is alright to be an individual. I think it is important for students to be able to relate to the topics they are reading about. If they do, fluency and reading levels will increase.

I think the students in my class will not only be able to relate to Tacky, but they will also be so excited to be reading from a real book and not the Basal textbook.

Their interest levels will be increased and their comprehension and fluency is bound to soar!
