Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Having enough money for lunch can be difficult for our students. Asking them to purchase notebooks for every single class is, for some, cruel. They have the desire to learn, but they lack the supplies needed to fulfill many of the class requirements. They need to be able to get these supplies.

Our student body is very diverse.

We have military kids, International Baccalaureate students, AVID students, students of all levels of learning, students from many walks of life, however the majority of the students have one thing that pulls them all together; they come from economically disadvantaged homes. Our school works hard to promote learning across the board. Our students have risen to meet these demands. The only thing they have asked of us it to not just stand there and lecture. To make the lessons as entertaining as well as educational.

My Project

Our district has begun using interactive notebooks. In many of our classes it is required of our students to use them every single day. Our students use these notebooks to take notes, place worksheets, place drawings, lab finding, tables, graphic organizer, any thing done in class gets stapled, glued, or taped into this notebook. They fill up fast and each class requires a notebook to be used only for that class. Although we go through supplies, it has really increased student interaction with the materials learned and therefore increased subject retention.

By increasing subject retention we are increasing the knowledge the student has of the subject.

This carries over into increased test scores, better classroom behavior, and higher grades over all. Our students see the difference and feel the difference. They are able to feel success because they are successful in their classes. Lacking the ability to purchase supplies should not stop them from achieving. Help me give them the notebooks they need.
