My Students

Most adults love to read their daily newspaper. People like to know what is happening in their world. So do kids! My students love to read about current events and to learn through reading. These magazines are the perfect way to do just that.

My students absolutely love to read nonfiction material.

When I ordered these magazines last year they were so excited. They would always ask when the next issue would be out. They told me they liked to read about things that were happening right now. Most of my students love to read, but many need something to motivate them. These magazines offer that motivation. Our language arts program really lacks nonfiction material, and my students seem to be interested in that genre the most. My students are very bright, eager to learn and deserve the best education possible. Many of them receive a free lunch at school and their families are not able to contribute any money to our class. Most of my students are also English language learners and really benefit from reading that contains pictures, diagrams and other visuals. I feel these magazines really help the students in my class.

My Project

Beyond simply reading these magazines, I can use the articles they contain to teach mini lessons on comprehension strategies. My school district is finally allowing us to be more flexible with our teaching and try more progressive teaching methods. I have read two very long books this summer which discuss teaching kids reading strategies though short fiction and nonfiction text. Students are then able to spend time reading and practicing those strategies. Both books I read constantly referred to articles in the magazines I have picked out. I can also use the articles in these magazines as models for student writing. When teaching children how to write, it is important to show them many examples of great writing. So while we are working on writing research reports or persuasive essays we will often look to these magazines to find models of great writing.

These magazines will help the students in my class in many ways.

They will help them to become informed citizens who are aware of what is happening in their country and world. They will get them excited to read a very important genre, nonfiction. They will be used in engaging lessons on writing and reading strategies. It is amazing how much two magazine subscriptions can do for a class of eager learners. My students and I would greatly appreciate your donation!
