A typical day in the math classroom is not lecture and homework - but active thinking, practicing & learning about math. Having many stations where students work at their level to become better at math. Whether we are writing on desks for practice, doing projects, or online - we are doing math!
We are a small rural K-12 one building school with a high school enrollment of about 100 students (total) in Wisconsin.
A large portion of our school is free/reduced lunch and many graduating students would be (and are) first generation secondary school students.
We have had good luck creating a culture in our math room that everyone can do it. We all know that "2+2=4 was hard at one point, but we all got that and we will get this. Not all on the same time frame, but all in good time."
But we have lacked resources for differentiation. Many students do not have resources at home, thus we must provide them within the school.
My Project
Picture a math classroom where everyone is active. Everyone is working on math that within reach but a challenge at the same time. In one spot you see a team of students working on a STEM project. In another you see some practice the new concept shown by video or lecture.
Then picture a corner where students are practicing on Khan using the chromebooks. See students getting the exact targeted practice they need. This is a huge piece of the puzzle - it moves math from the traditional pencil and paper to learning that is targeted and forward moving for the student. It uses technology to make each student better at math!
This project can be a huge piece in moving my classroom from traditional math homework to true practice that really increases the student's math ability.
By using Khan and stations with Chromebooks we can move seamlessly between things and have math practice that is truly individualized and differentiated.
It will make a math room that few parents recognize but a room that all parents would be excited to have their student learn in.
