My students need an iPad mini (with a protective case) to film or record themselves telling jokes, showing how to fold origami, reciting poems, or performing a magic trick.
Public speaking is daunting at any age. I want to make it fun for the kids. The children at my library (K-5), love checking out joke, craft and activity books. I would like to have an iPad handy for students to film each other telling jokes, reciting a poem, or showing how to make or do something.
It all started with joke books (a popular section with the kids).
When a student checked out a joke book, I would have him/her read me a joke from the book.
Knowing how young people love filming themselves, I thought that it would be fun to record students telling jokes. The idea then expanded to include other forms of public speaking.
Oxford is a small K-5 school (~300 students) Our population is diverse with children coming from a variety of backgrounds experientially, ethnically, and socio-economically. The school is small, but there is a strong feeling of community where teachers, staff, and families work together for the success of all children.
The library is a hub of activity - students regularly visit during recess and lunch breaks to find books to read, look up information, help with various library tasks, draw, play board games, and even read books.
My Project
I am requesting a small number of joke and activity books and an iPad mini. I would like to record students telling jokes or giving how to presentation. I would work collaboratively with classroom and after school teachers to create videos or sound recordings of students telling jokes, performing a magic trick, or making a short how-to video.
This project would be helpful for all students -especially English Learners and struggling readers, who will have a chance to practice and strengthen their reading, writing, and speaking skills and produce a product to share.
When students are happy with what they have done, the product will be shared with others.
Everyone has a story, but it takes practice communicating in a safe environment.
Practicing and being able to see one's progress can be a valuable learning experience.
Students would think deeply about the topic they want to film and consider how to best communicate their ideas (through words, images, camera angles, etc.). They would also write a script, and, hopefully have fun sharing a joke, magic trick, or information on how to fold an origami ninja star.
