Mrs. Reed-Smith from Dallas TX is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 23 copies of Miss Nelson Is Missing to improve their reading and because they love when I read the book.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Can you imagine what it feels like to be a child and not own 1 single book? This is the world my students live in. When they get home, they do not have any books to practice reading with. Nor do they see parents reading in the home to help motivate them to read.
My students are African American and Hispanic students who live in a high poverty neighborhood in Dallas.
The neighborhood is also drug and crime infested. Our school is a Title I school with more than 90% of students on free lunch. Our school was just rated academically unacceptable by the state for the second time. Many of their parents do not have a high school education or speak English. Every year, reading is the area where they score the lowest on the state test. Some of the students that come to our school have repeated a grade level, have behavior problems, or are not where they should be academically. It is time for this to change. Many of our students are neglected, have emotional problems, or are being taken care of by their grandparents or siblings. Teachers get little parent support. These students require a lot of love, patience, and attention but are a joy to work with.
I am requesting 22 copies of "Miss Nelson is Missing" for my students to have at home. They love when I read this book to them. I have read it several times since school has started for fun and to teach comprehension skills. The students get to practice reading the books at home which will improve their reading skills and prepare them for the upper grades. The students will also get to read for pleasure and see how fun it is to read. Having these books will make them eager to read.
This project is so important because it gives each student a nice book to take home to read and improve their literacy skills.
Many families are unable to buy books because they have to spend their money on other expenses. Please help me foster my students' love for reading.
