Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We really appreciate you reading our project! A typical day in a science classroom is changing. Next Generation Science Standards are taking us from multiple choice assessments to having students demonstrate their understanding of science by solving authentic, real-life problems.
Our school is in a high poverty area.
Our budget is very small so most of our resources are collected (fibers) or bought from local stores (ink pads for fingerprints). My students love forensic science class but they only learn so much without specialized equipment.
Young people from low socioeconomic areas usually go on to low paying jobs, continuing the cycle of poverty, with many ending up in the prison system. Education and job training can help break this cycle of poverty. These materials help students work with real life application of math and science when they examine and use case studies and evidence in the performance tasks. These materials will allow our students to have real world lab experiences, use deductive reasoning and critical thinking which can be used directly in careers.
My Project
My students need 3 autopsy investigation replacement kits, forensic insects, and other forensic materials to study science through applying the various techniques used in a crime scene investigations to deduce answers and find a solution.
The project will use Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in the forensic science classroom. Students will use performance tasks to demonstrate their understanding of science concepts and improving on lab techniques. This type of learning includes connects what they have learned in other science classes and the interrelationships between all areas of study.
The materials we are requesting will have students use such investigative strategies as performing a presumptive blood test from the scene in order to conduct a variety of biological tests-including blood typing and DNA and also to identify the life stages of insects to determine time of death. These activities will culminate with students using autopsy protocols of medical examiners to identify the cause of death in preserved specimens.
These materials allow us to provide our students with high quality real life science experiences.
These activities allow students to increase their understanding of science concepts in biology, chemistry, earth science and physics as well as the basic processes and principles of scientific thinking.
These goals are essential for students to help fill in gaps in their understanding of science concepts.
These materials bring STEM and NGSS into the forensic classroom, not only changing how students learn but possibly changing lives.
