My Students

Do you remember being four? Learning to keep your hands to yourself. Learning about your own personal space. Wanting, but more importantly, needing, a place to call your own. I am moving to an older portable building with no "meeting" carpet for my Pre-K classroom.

These children are just that: children.

Four year old children leaving Mom and Dad for the first time. Exciting and scary at the same time. Our school is Title 1 with the majority of our students on free or reduced lunch. We are a beautiful variety of nationalities and abilities.

My Project

Having a color block carpet (a color block grid) would give the students the perceptional awareness of their own space. It would teach them personal space and be a reminder that each person should keep hands and feet to themselves. Knowing that the students are not packed too closely together or wandering to other parts of the room will be a comfort. The boundaries the students will learn at this early age will be a springboard for future encounters.

Included in the Title 1 district is a very small budget.

This higher dollar item, while essential, would be hard. While I am working on making sure this classroom is stocked with the most essential items, I feel as though I need to be very selective with the items I do add to the budget. Donations to this project will benefit these students in so many ways. Educationally, as they sit and sing through calendar or other whole group activities; and socially, as they learn personal space.
