Our "classroom" is a four adjoining computer labs that are being redesigned. Students have asked for a lab to create. This makerspace is the first step towards allowing students to direct their learning. The District is committed to seeing personalize learning come to fruition.
We have amazing youth in Walworth.
We also have amazing challenges in our K-8 district. We are a Title 1 school, and over half of our students are living in poverty. Our students are passionate about learning and the older students take great pride in mentoring the younger students. In order to ensure our students are leaving school prepared for college, career, and community; they need leadership opportunities. The students are genuinely excited to own their learning and are ready to learn and create.
My Project
Our school is changing. We are implementing personalized learning to all 476 learners in a K-8 school. We are shifting towards interdisciplinary student-directed learning. Our students passion will run our school. This makerspace is a major step towards placing the students in the center. The cost for starting a makerspace is several hundred dollars. And my school has already committed to resources to get the plan started.
Items I'm requesting that students will use to create include:
-Legos
-Raspberry PI
-Little Bits circuits
-Arduino
The makerspace will be a Self Organized Learning Environment (see: Sugata Mitra's TED Talk) for the entire school. The range of supplies in this project will also for 2nd graders to work side-by-side 6th graders. Our makerspace will have a variety of materials for students of all abilities, ages, and developmental levels.
Donations from this project will change the entire school.
Every teacher in the school brings their students into our lab. After school and before school programs will have needed supplies. Students will have access and be able to create, design, and dream. Thank you for taking the time to look at our project, all assistance is appreciated.
