It is my wish that students can use this material to gain enough knowledge throughout the year to be able to independently conduct environmental inquiry beyond the formal classroom setting. Students need the background knowledge that will encourage them to further their environmental education.
Our school is based in a very rural area and, despite this, our students have very little knowledge of environmental education and conservation practices.
They beg for things to do that allow them to be outdoors and enjoy learning more about the environment. However, in the past, we have been limited to special events like Earth Day to get our students excited about the environment. They enjoy the activities and always ask for but until now we have not had the opportunity to expand their environmental knowledge outdoors.
My Project
These materials will make it possible for my students to be successful in an outdoor environmental education classroom. This is a new course and we are starting from scratch so we will need support from others like you to obtain appropriate material. Students will be able to learn about biodiversity, native and invasive species, water and soil quality, ecosystem sustainability and conservation. The materials in this list will allow the students to learn about these things in a way that is hands on and engaging and will keep students excited to come to school and learn. My students need water and soil quality kits, ecosystem models, and biodiversity kits
Richard Louv speaks of today's children suffering from nature deficit disorder and that is especially true in this area.
I have strived to expose my students to outdoor environmental education as an extracurricular but we now have the opportunity as a class to get students excited for school and environmental education.
