My school's Spanish home literacy program provides books to students in grades 4K through fifth grade to read at home with their families. Our book cart is pretty beat up and needs to be replaced in order to keep being able to bring the books outside.
The students who take books home from our book cart attend my elementary school that serves students ages 4-11 (4K to fifth grade).
Our school teaches only in English, but 32% of the students speak Spanish at home. In order to support reading at home we like to provide them books in Spanish that they can use. I enjoy pushing our cart outside to greet the children every morning, but last year's rough winter took quite a toll on the cart. Unfortunately, the cart we salvaged from a dumpster five years ago is no longer easy to move around and has a tendency to flip over when the wheels lock up. In order to keep supporting our home literacy program we need to be able to bring the books to the children.
My Project
Our children get excited to run up to the book cart on the playground every morning to choose new books that they can read at home. Unfortunately, our old cart isn't moving very well and we need a new way to move the books to the children. We hope to use a new cart and new boxes to organize books and move our books around so children can continue to access them.
We want reading to be a family activity and hope to be able to continue to provide books that families can read in their homes.
Of course, we can always use more books, but, right now, we need a new way to move the books we have outside for the students.
