Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried to have conferences with students in a space that couldn't fit both of you? Ever try to help a student work on individual assignments on a space that was inadequate? It is very difficult to work in an inadequate space.
The majority of my students come from low income homes.
There are many in our school that come from military families, from single family homes, from homes where education takes a back seat to trying to put food on the table, and where because of these things, and many others, they do not get much one on one attention at home. Giving them one on one instruction is not only a joy for me, but it a positive reinforcement for them that someone does care. One on one instruction allows them to ask questions they would not ask in front of the class.
My Project
Having a space to provide one on one instruction is essential. These students need a place in which they can come place there book and paper down, pull up a chair, and with a little room and privacy ask about their work. Struggling students do not want it made public that they are struggling. Getting them to come up to an area where they obviously stick out is tough. Imagine standing next to the teacher at a podium to ask a question because the desk space is too small, too cracked, weak, and falling apart. Imagine trying to balance your book, your paper, and ask the question without grabbing everyone's attention in the room that you are standing there. For these reasons, I am requesting 1 desk to be used as a student-teacher meeting place.
A workspace that is adequate for my students and myself would allow us to hold one on one meetings where there would be enough space to spread out the book, and the paper, to pull up a chair and not stand in awkwardness.
We need a place to meet, share, learn, and be successful by making connections.
