Jose, Zaire and Grace are leading the way on this project, driven by their curiosity to learn more about America's national parks.
These students are just three among many who have noticed and commented on the posters up in our classroom, posters I have collected from visiting national parks my whole life, from “A Day in the Life of the Grand Canyon,” to Old Faithful in Yellowstone, to a towering 7’ tall poster of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.
This project calls for researching a national park, and recording a public service announcement encouraging people to travel to that specific park or national monument, be it the historic “Freedom Trail” in Boston, to the Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. Research skills are a necessity for building college and career ready students, and called for in the new Common Core State Standards. Working in teams builds collaborative and teamwork skills. Researching our precious national parks builds empathy for caring for the environment, and a deeper knowledge of history. We are caretakers of our environment, and if young people are not vested in our national parks, in the future, our parks might fall to ruin.
In Their Own Words
We are excited to learn more about our national parks and get other kids to learn more too. In teams, we are going to research a national park of our choice, and write up a PSA to record and broadcast to our school, hopefully getting other students interested in going to these parks one day.
We will order guidebooks on national parks to do our research, including from the National Geographic and books made on this topic for kids. We will need to use the computer to research the actual national park websites which are full of information and activities at each park.
This project is important because it will be fun and we will learn a lot! We are curious about questions like how old is the giant sequoia? How much does a bison weigh? How tall is the Gateway Arch? Who is on Mt. Rushmore? We will learn how to work in teams and learn how to record audio and share fun information with the school with our announcements. We will educate others!
