My Students Go to a School Where Pluto Is a Planet! Part 1

My students need new science books!

My Students

I am a librarian in a middle school of 700+ students. Every day we have hundreds of students coming through our doors and using all our resources, but our non-fiction section is not getting much use as it is so far out of date.

The school I work at is a high achieving school with lots of enthusiastic, curious students.

They are always investigating new things and reading about their own passions. For instance I currently have a student who is fascinated by epidemics and plagues, and is reading every book we have about diseases. This is totally unrelated to his science class, he just checks the books out daily because that is what is piquing his curiosity right now.

My Project

I am requesting 50 new science books because our science section in the library has not been updated in ten years. It is so out of date that Pluto is still a planet in our school! But our students are curious and want to read on their own, so they need accurate information! I'd hate to send our epidemiologist-to-be to high school thinking that he is an expert on AIDS or SARS when these are areas that change rapidly.

Finally, our district is implementing the Common Core State Standards this year, and there is a heavy emphasis on reading non-fiction texts.

I need to update our collection, not only so it is more recent and relevant, but also so that old, boring, stale texts can be replaced with more interesting, readable, narrative non-fiction. This is what will catch students' attention and get them to read and want to learn more about science.
