This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students LOVE Boomwhackers! It is the center of the 1st grade music curriculum and all students from all grades love using Boomwhackers at the Boomwhackers station in their classroom. Unfortunately, over 5 years some of the Boomwhackers have become bent or broken. We need more Boomwhackers!

I teach in NY and my students are almost all English Language Learners from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.

They are extremely creative but the state tests in ELA and Math do not reflect their creative ability in the arts. Our school has been rated poorly based on those exams. The school has a very caring staff and supportive administration that strongly advocates arts education, but we lack the funding for replenishing instruments used in the classroom.

My Project

The students need two more Boomwhackers so they can participate in more Boomwhacker activities.  As of now, my school has been using 1 set of complete Boomwhackers, which is barely enough for one class.  The new set of Boomwhackers will replace the damage Boomwhackers, as well as help students work in groups to collaboratively participate in melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic exercises

Boomwhackers are a first step to the larger world of playing instrumental music.

My students want to have more fun with new Boomwhackers that they can play in groups and use to read and compose rhythms, melodies, and harmonies, These experiences provide a music literacy foundation they can use when attempting to learn how to play instruments that require a higher level of technique.
