This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students in the library are discovering different concepts related to research and books. This year, we are specifically focusing on science with the older grades to help them gain a deeper understanding before going to middle school.
A little over half our school qualifies for free and reduced lunch.
Our students are eager to learn but often don't have advantages from home to help them make educational connections that would allow them build a strong knowledge base. We also have a small hearing impaired population. Our turnover is relatively low which allows for us to get to know students over the years.
My Project
When students enter the library, they are given a choice of various stations. A few students go to each station. They can rotate through many of them, or they can return to one frequently. In the older grades, students are focusing on science concepts in centers to help add support to their understanding of science topics.
We don't have very many genetics/heredity materials and that is one of the topics that students now cover in elementary science.
The flip chart, books and center materials will help the students gain a better understanding of the heredity concepts that are introduced in their science classrooms.
