My students need 30 choral folders, and new instruments (3 Djembes, 2 Congas, 1 Cabasa, and 1 Steel Drum Set) to play and learn about world percussion and culture.
“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. “ -Victor Hugo
My students have the thirst to create and the desire to express themselves. This opportunity is given through our music program, and gives students a chance to experience music through performance.
Nestled in the heart of New England is a small school that serves a diverse group of fantastic students who love to learn.
The mission of this school is to prepare educationally under-resourced students for today's competitive world. The students aim to develop their academic and social skills necessary to become successful professionals and exemplary members of their community.
This is achieved by providing the students with a rigorous academic curriculum with emphasis on math and science, balanced by a strong foundation in the humanities, a character education program, career-oriented college preparation, and strong student-teacher-parent collaboration.
At the center of the humanities program and the only fine arts program our school has is the music program. The students who choose these kind of classes on top of an incredibly hard math and science program are dedicated, talented, and creative people who yearn for more.
My Project
Our students will be using the materials in two ways:
-Chorus will use the new folders to replace their current folders (which have seen better days!) and will use them to perform in concerts, pep rallies, and competitions.
In the past, we have performed at the Great East Adjudication Festival, Veterans Day presentations, prior to the Providence Philharmonic Orchestra, and for the home opener game of the Providence Bruins.
-Middle School students of 7th and 8th grade will utilize the instruments to learn about world culture and perform on them.
This unit will help teach the students about how culture influences music, and how the interaction of culture helps create and spread new music throughout the world.
Music has been shown to have an overwhelming benefit on the education of students.
It helps raise math scores, increases focus, helps reading, aids in fine motor control, gives students an outlet to create and express, and so much more. It has inspired innovation and is present in almost every walk of life. As Friedrich Nietzsche once said:
"Without music, life would be a mistake."
