This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning for my preschoolers with special needs requires hands-on, highly interactive and motivating tools. Traditional methods of learning are not effective for them.

My preschoolers are 3-4 years old, and have special needs due to autism, cognitive deficits, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays.

They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a large school district. Most have minimal language or are nonverbal. Many of my preschoolers have behavior challenges and require intensive intervention. When provided with highly motivating learning opportunities, and lots of nurturing, they flourish!

My Project

My long term goal is to furnish half my class with iPod Touches. When I introduced the iPad to my preschoolers 1 1/2 years ago, I was surprised to find how well they were able to independently interact with it. iPods are just smaller versions of the iPad, but at a fraction of the cost! I use it for a behavior shaper, to earn "iPad time." We were able to improve behaviors, promote speech and language, and engage our students in readiness skills learning! I will start with asking for one iPod Touch and work my way to having a small group of students with iPod Touches. My class would greatly benefit from having a small digital camera on hand daily. I do take photos regularly (with my son's big camera) to create picture schedules, behavior charts, and end-of-the year scrapbooks for my students. We often use their own photos in student-made books and activities. Our photo wall is one of my students' favorite places in the classroom!

My preschoolers with special needs learn best when they are motivated and engaged.

They are so motivated with the iPad! I know they will love the iPod just as much! Implementing this easy to use technology in my preschool program has already proved successful in promoting language, improving behaviors, and learning readiness skills. My preschoolers are very visual learners and what better than to have their own photos used in their lessons! I also use the photos to upload to our class website.
