Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
To inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, we cannot simply rely on worksheets. We must give them the hands-on opportunities of labs and demonstrations. To give my students the same exposure to Chemistry that I had in high school, I hope to incorporate a complete lab curriculum.
My students are thinkers, dreamers, and creators.
They have limitless potential. Unfortunately, what limits them is the resources we have at our school. The high school I teach at is traditionally at the bottom of the district in test performance and overall achievement. It is therefore my charge to give my students the same opportunities more affluent students have to engage with science. I believe true scientists are borne out of experiments and exposure. In my classroom they are a total of 4 beakers, one electronic balance, and two chipped thermometers. By adding new equipment and a functional lab curriculum, these students will have a renewed sense of curiosity, inquiry, and analysis.
My Project
With these materials a full lab curriculum can be implemented into my Chemistry classes. Students will be able to engage weekly with beakers, scales, titration equipment and thermometers either through lab experiments or demonstrations to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the content. Labs will include determining an unknown solution using a buret, or calculating the amount of heat released through measuring temperature rise. In addition, students will have the feeling of being in an actual laboratory, which will increase exposure to what it feels to be like a scientist. Finally, lab skills are a very marketable set of skills as it requires attention to detail, careful planning, and strong analytical skills. As students move on to college and into the workplace, students will be able to prove they have the skills necessary to be successful.
Most of my students believe that "they are not science people", but most of these students haven't truly experienced what it means to be a scientist.
They have simply been loaded full of equations and concepts and asked to memorize, never apply them in a true experiment. These donations will give my students lab equipment they have never seen or used before. The equipment and labs will help them develop an appreciation of science to create the next generation of scientists and engineers.
