Movement to Build Body Awareness and Learning!

My students need 2 T-stools for stabilization and body awareness, a rolling seat for gross motor movement, and a coordination and obstacle course set.

My Students

Children crave movement and simply do not get enough targeted movement to build strong and healthy bodies that are ready for learning!

My wonderful 4 and 5 year old students are homeless and military dependent living in suburban Maryland.

To qualify for our program, you must be below poverty level or with special needs so we are a very special group! If you are here, you are here to get a jump start on learning and school readiness and we do just that! I have 2 classes that attend for 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week with their elementary school pals and many of my students are here for short intervals, making learning that much harder for them.

My Project

Research over the past several years has linked movement and balance with reading readiness, to the degree that it has been said if a child cannot balance on 1 foot for more than 10 seconds, they are not ready for letters and sounds. You can imagine the problem this presents when children are not getting adequate exercise and movement when they leave the school environment. With the push for academics and physical education not being offered for half day students, it is even more essential that my kids movement and gross motor skills are explicitly addressed!

With the addition of the T-stools, rolling stool and obstacle course kit, I will be able to have up to 40 students working on their core, building strength and body awareness without even realizing it!

They will learn subtly how to use their bodies and make sense of those muscle groups involved. Sitting and attending will be SO much easier for them, and using their bodies purposefully will magically happen. It would be a huge blessing to have these resources available and at hand!
