My students need to improve literacy and I am hoping to get 20 Kindles to help with Move On With Reading and give my students the ability to have fun with reading.
I am trying to get my students more interested in reading, getting them to read more, and working on fluency & comprehension. I want my students to all hit the 100 book challenge that the school has going on. "We shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading." - B. F. Skinner
My students are Native American, 99% Navajo, and 1% other.
My students work hard, but struggle. Some of them still struggle with just recognizing the letters of the alphabet to even recognize CVC words. I teach 2nd and 3rd Grade Special Education. My school is an Elementary school that has been combined from four schools down to one due to budgetary crunches that all Public School Districts feel.
My students definitely have their likes and dislikes. I want to give them a way to read in the resource classroom with something other than textbooks or paper books. I want to open for them the Universe. I want them to travel without having to physically go somewhere. My students have the capability to read hundreds of books. Amazon always has books for free, many of them children's books. That is what I will use for the Kindles, to give them a variety of things to read.
My Project
I envision using these Kindles in the classroom for my students to be able to read more things than just the textbooks, or library books. I want to open up more doors for them, with word games that can be purchased for the Kindle, giving them things to do other than just read. I believe by giving them ways to do things interactively other than just turn a page will encourage them to do more reading, writing, and learning.
I will get non-fiction, fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, etc for them to read. I want to open up all sorts of doors for them, to realize their potential by reading more. This fits along with the Move on With Reading program that we are working on for our students at the school. We are also doing a 100 book challenge. I would love to have 100+ books on each kindle, giving students the chance to read each and every book on there, encouraging them to learn about something new.
Technology is a really big thing in school now.
Donations to this project will help me bring in some technology to my room, where I can get hundreds of books and take up very little space. As a class/group we can read the same book on multiple kindles at the same time, we can have book discussions, using those books for writing, encouraging, learning to have a thought about what we're reading, comprehending what we're reading as we read them together.
