My students need six Grab and Match leveled math games to reinforce concepts, such as fractions, operations, place value, and measurement, while working in math centers.
Who has positive memories of learning math in elementary school? Well, my students do! They love playing math games and problem-solving activities in math stations. Not only do math games teach students math skills, they also teach life-long problem-solving skills, all while having fun!
In the elementary school where I teach, we are the largest Title I elementary school in our county.
The enrollment of my school consists of approximately 910 students, which includes kindergarten through 5th grade and an ethnic makeup of: 40% Caucasian, 31% Hispanic, 19% Black, 4% Asian, and 6% other. Our school community consists of a diverse population which includes single family homes, apartments, hotels, and multiple mobile home parks. We have a 29% ELL population. This diversity enhances the multicultural experiences of all students while at the same time presenting unique challenges for the rigorous nature of the curriculum. The staff at my school lives by the belief "Make Every Minute Count", which encompasses our commitment to providing an engaging and relevant education that prepares every student to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
My Project
In today's classrooms, math is taught much differently than 20 years ago. Gone are the days where rote memorization is the primary strategy for teaching basic math facts. It has been replaced with superb strategies, such as Number Talks, which teaches children a plethora of different efficient strategies! What is great about these different strategies is that the students can choose to use which strategy works best for them.
Another awesome strategy for teaching math today is the use of math games/activities in math stations. These games/activities not only teach students the content they need to learn; They also teach life-long problem-solving skills!
The six "Grab and Match" leveled games I am requesting will reinforce concepts, such as fractions, operations, measurement, and place value, while working independently or with a partner in math centers/stations. These games will not only help students learn math concepts. They will also teach life-long problem-solving skills!
Donations to this project will not only help students learn necessary math concepts; they will also learn life-long problem solving skills AND increase student motivation to learn math skills.
Playing math games/activities in math centers gets students excited about learning! Sometimes they even forget that they are learning! Don't you just love when students are so engaged in these activities that they are disappointed when they have to stop???
