My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you got your hands on a magazine? The photographs were so colorful and realistic! The print looked totally different than the regular story books you were used to! What about the time you saw your own work hanging on the classroom wall?

I have a class of 19 second grade students.

We live in a small urban city. Many of my students speak English as a second language. Many of these students do not have the vocabulary and background knowledge possessed by some of their monolingual classmates. All of my students are eager to learn to become better readers and writers. As their teacher, I would like to expose them to different genres of texts. I also want them to realize that books are not the only way to get information.

My Project

I would love for my students to receive the weekly magazine Time for Kids. This would be a great opportunity for them to read informational texts at and appropriate reading level. I am also requesting a set of student pointers. These will be used for a center called Read Around the Room. This is a time when small groups of students go around the room reading the writing produced by the class. It is a huge motivator for them to read the words written by their classmates.

One of my major goals this year is to expose my students to more informational texts.

Your donation will allow these students to read the work of other authors as well as their own.
