My Students

We need more books to feed our hunger for reading! We were fortunate enough to have received a listening center in our classroom and have been enjoying it so much that we have already listened to all the stories we have.

The students in my classroom are an active bunch of second graders.

All of the students are learning in Spanish, on their way to becoming bilingual and bilterate, as we are part of a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. About half of the students are native English speakers and the other half native Spanish speakers. Our classroom is situated in a very culturally diverse school with a high low-income population.

My Project

The students would have the opportunity to use these materials every day as a part of our literacy block. The students have shown a great excitement around listening to the stories and and the books themselves. These resources can help increase student excitement and motivation around reading. Also, listening to the stories will help to improve their reading fluency, which in turn helps with reading comprehension. It will also help with building vocabulary for reading and writing. It also provides the students with the opportunity to hear correctly modeled language and can help to improve pronunciation, as well as oral language skills.

The project will help us move toward our ultimate goal of not only being bilingual but also biliterate.

It will help students improve their reading, writing and oral language in Spanish.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
