More Books For Our Home Reading Program

My Students

¡Nos encanta leer! My students and their families love having books that they can read together at home and in their home language. Our school's home literacy program provides books that students can bring home to read in Spanish.

Students enter my school for 4 year old kindergarten and continue here until fifth grade.

All of our classes are taught in English, so our school has a lot of books available in English. To encourage reading at home, I have a book cart full of books in Spanish that over 50 students use to have Spanish language materials to use at home. Many of the older students have been picking books from our book cart almost every day since the program began five years ago. After five years of reading, some students have read every book we own and some of our favorites have become very well used. I hope to continue to provide books that students can share with the families, but am looking for a few new options for them. After talking with students and families, we've collected a list of more chapter books, extra books from some of our favorite series, a collection of books on science topics, and new books about sports.

My Project

The books from our book cart are mostly read at home. Some students choose to read alone in order to practice reading in their first language, while others look for books to read with family members. The youngest students simply choose books that look interesting and bring them home to have an adult read with them. I love to see the kids excited about reading and want to keep having materials available that interest them in reading and will turn reading into a daily, family activity.

I want all of my students to maintain their Spanish fluency that they learned at home and I want to support literacy in their home language.

Even more than that, I want to keep all of them excited about books and reading. Any time we have new books on the cart, students begin talking about their favorite books with their friends and searching for new books to read with their families. Our school library is full of great books in English, but I also want to support reading in any language.
