My students need 4 buckets of Play-Doh and 5 Play-Doh kits for hands on, creative experiences, so that they learn their letters, numbers, shapes, and develop stronger fine motor skills.
Kindergarten is a wonderful year for young students. Kindergarten means music, movement, and many creative experiences. We all learn best by doing. I want to help my students have many opportunities to actually do things with their hands, have fun, and learn at the same time.
I teach at a high poverty, low income school.
We are a Title One school in Oklahoma. Our state has one of the lowest per-pupil funding, which means we are lacking some basic educational resources. Some of my students have never been to school before and they have not learned their letters, sounds, or numbers. Some have very limited experiences and I would love to help broaden their experiences in creative ways.
My Project
My students need 4 buckets of Play-Doh and 5 Play-Doh kits for hands on, creative experiences, so that they learn their letters, numbers, shapes, and develop stronger fine motor skills. Some of my students have not learned their written name, letters, sounds, or numbers. I want my children to have fun ways to learn their names and letters. It is so much more engaging to create your name in play-doh than to just sit and write it on paper. You learn more through actively doing, than just passively writing on paper. Creating your name or stamping the alphabet in play-dough is engaging and helps the student learn and remember.
My students will be able to stamp the alphabet, match upper and lower case letters, create sight words, even create friends' names. We will be able to do math activities in a concrete way to help master one to one correspondence, addition, and subtraction. The list goes on and on. While they are 'playing' in the play-dough, they will also be strengthening their fine motor skills which will help them be able to do paper and pencil activities in higher grades. These items will be a great addition to our word work center time and our math centers.
Self-esteem grows quickly in kindergarten as students work together and learn through hands on experiences.
This project will help strengthen fine motor skills, math skills, literacy skills, and self esteem. Let's mold these fine young students!!
