Molding And Modelling Creativity With Clay

My students need modeling clay to experiment with sculpture.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When can we use clay again? A resounding call for more clay is a familiar request in the art room at my school. My students in grades K-5 love sculpting with clay and find great joy in using their hands to make their ideas come to life.

We are only able to order enough clay for each child in our school to create one clay project per year.

Since children learn and create at different speeds, having extra clay for them to use would enhance their learning and creativity. The majority of my students do not have much exposure to the arts outside of the school day. It is imperative that avenues for creative expression that are self-directed are offered to my students when they come to art. In order to maximize the short 45-minute art period my students have per week, I want to introduce a clay center in the art room where students can use modeling clay to endlessly create three-dimensional forms and experiment with a multitude of clay techniques.

My Project

Imagine a group of students from all backgrounds and skill levels inspiring and teaching each other through the hands-on activity of clay sculpture. Regardless of ability, students can benefit from the imaginative and expressive development that modeling clay has to offer. When they are given the time to experiment with clay, their creativity and problem-solving ability will be strengthened. Students will work at the clay center in the art room throughout the school year building their social skills and self-esteem. From the early stages of childhood, children are eager to use their hands to create. Clay is a wonderful medium for children to express the innate human desire for creativity.

We live in an ever changing world where education impacts our future and the future of the world.

Developing creativity should be high on the list of goals for 21st century education. My students will benefit from the resources for the clay center because they will be given an opportunity to experiment and learn in a creative environment where they will initiate and determine their path to learning.
