There is no typical day in Ms. Zarate's room. Each day is a new adventure. The nature of my room is constantly changing, as are the needs of my students. This is an exciting challenge that I hope to live up to each day.
My students are diverse learners.
Each one of them has a cognitive disability that significantly impacts their learning. Some of them also have a physical disability to work with and around. Not only do my students have these physical and cognitive challenges, but they are all English language learners. These students rise above all the hurdles put in front of them at our urban, low-socioeconomic school. Each day I'm proud to be their teacher, as they continue to show promise and a willingness to put the hard work in!
My Project
The furniture situation in my room is SAD. When we returned from summer vacation the tables we had were gone. Our school's number have expanded and another teacher needed the tables in her general education room. Since there is such a shortage of furniture, I was forced to go into the teachers lounge to use an adult sized circular table. This table is much too tall for my students and it also doesn't allow all the students to see the board (because it's circular). I am requesting 2 rectangular tables that are adjustable in height. The table are also made of marker board, allowing me or my students to write on them, and create interactive learning. Additionally, I am requesting ball chairs which affords my students who need constant movement that ability.
Having furniture that fits the needs of my students will allow them to focus on school work instead of on being uncomfortable and unable to see the lessons!
It's really awful to have students unable to write because the tables and chairs are too tall for them. It's unfair to have some students have to sit with their backs to the chalkboard because they are supposed to be writing and looking at the board at the same time. Having the right tools will make learning so much easier!
