With the song lyrics, "Mo-ney, money, money.. mo-ney" dancing in my head, I want to offer a powerful economics unit. My goal is to mesh real world lessons tied to entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. I have the other items, but I am missing a computer for 1 financial literacy center.
I am currently a 4th-grade team teacher with close to two decades of experience.
At this time, I teach Science, Social Studies, and Math at a Pre K-5th grade school. My school has 544 students. Both my students and I are drawn toward creative projects and we love to create powerful, curriculum-based projects. As the teacher, I love incorporating more with making commercials and dealing with economics. As a Social Studies teacher, I teach financial literacy lessons annually. My students need a new laptop to help with my lessons and videos we will produce.
My Project
I am a firm believer in hands-on manipulative lessons for economics. I created a plan of action. First, my students would create & advertise a chosen business while learning the meaning of the words entrepreneur, advertise, profit, and loss. My goal is for my students to understand how to develop a business & then advertise it. It is critical for them to personally experience how entrepreneurship & financial literacy skills go hand in hand. Using the new laptop and video equipment, my students would create a video. This new laptop would help reinforce money skills & my students would create ads on it, too. The laptop would be used in an economics center during this financial literacy unit. The other activity would be creating a business and advertising it. Students could use the laptop to design a sign to advertise their business with a logo, or catch phrase, etc. The culminating activity would be creating the product & commercial. Together, these activities would create one powerful unit!

Money is a subject that students show an interest in because it is needed. Together, you can help with this quest to enrich financial literacy & the importance of counting money.
