My students need a USB microscope, magnifying glasses and non-fiction texts about plants and animals to help them conduct research and other science experiments.
My students are always fascinated by the world around them and are eager to learn more about plants, animals and themselves through hands on learning. This eagerness is so easy to capitalize on when it comes to conducting science investigations.
My school is ethnically, racially, economically and linguistically diverse, with a large population of students who speak Spanish.
We speak Spanish in my kindergarten classroom and for many of my students, this is their first experience with school and all of the expectations that go along with it. Not to mention that outside of our classroom, they face the challenge of communicating in their second (or third) language.
My students' ability to navigate a multilingual and multicultural world is key to their academic success and they are curious and energetic and ready to learn!
My Project
My goal is to have students begin to see themselves as scientists. Using high quality, age appropriate scientific tools and texts will help them begin to to take research and data seriously.
The hand magnifiers and USB microscope will help us make more accurate observations of our animals and plants during our animal and life cycles units. Our non-fiction texts about plants and animals will help students write research papers about plants and animals that they have studied. We hope to lay the foundation for students' development as scientists and their understanding of the scientific method.
In many instances, students in schools with high poverty don't have access to high quality, age appropriate texts or materials to teach science effectively.
This project will help provide resources so that our youngest students can begin to develop a love for science, conducting investigations and writing research based upon their investigations.
