Making money is a big deal! My students need to see that money matters with financial literacy in a society that is changing from industrial to a more socially oriented innovative way of managing and creating money in our community. Making money make sense is a moral imperative in our classroom.
Here in Michigan, we have been impacted by the changing nature of our economy moving from industrial to a more technological savvy nation.
My students are the focus of our socially interactively aware generation of creators. My Cadets are an amazing group of culturally diverse and authentic learners. Our school is in a neighborhood in need of tender loving care, and it has 90% free breakfast and lunch programs. From the beginning of the school year, we have been developing our critical thinking skills specifically, working in collectives creating mathematical and social studies laced financial literacy. It is this theme that we connect our learning to hands-on, collaborative groups, and community responsibility. Now, my forth and fifth grade Cadets are developing 21st century skills as all digital natives should strive to do. We are creating financial resources that bring math and social studies vocabulary words alive, insight, and actions to chronicle their math journey this year.

Having a Mini Makers Marketplace will set my students down the road to an amazing exploration into the world of socially aware financial literacy. My Cadets will vote for their own board of directors, marketplace rules, funding options for individuals, develop currency (i.e. credit cards, service award certificates), keep inventory, use video to advertise craft pencil, book binding, art paper, glue sticks, markers and supplies for incentives for great work and great behavior. These supplies can inspire the imagination of a whole class which will allow students to problem solve and create informative videos that can ignite the love for math and donation opportunities for community projects. Yes, they can be an instrument of change in our learning community and your donation will fire up our Cadets' inventive spirit. These students will get needed supplies that are difficult for parents to purchase and to allow students to encourage positive behavior by being rewarded with resources.
Our Cadets will engage in creating a community of socially and financially responsible citizens.
Your gift will provide the students to build a classroom Mini Makers Marketplace that will provide students with the opportunity to can earn resources for individuals, create, and manage supplies. These 4-5th graders will elect a board of directors to develop projects for students. Your generosity will stock the shelves with supplies that empower our youngest citizens to make money matter.
