Mindfulness and Yoga: The Still and Quiet Place Within
My students need yoga mats, chimes and a singing bowl for meditation and books that teach mindfulness such as Anh's Anger, Mindful Movements and Meditation is an Open Sky.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year, we have added mindfulness to our schedule and I have seen a big difference in the our classroom life. Students ask to practice mindfulness when I forget! I am excited to add yoga to our daily routine.
Our school is in a small urban community.
It is a highly diverse, low income school. We work hard as a school community to bring a sense of peace and calm to our students during the school day. Our students do not always have the coping skills they need to deal with anger or frustration, but our work in mindfulness has begun to help them have some strategies that they can use to help them throughout the school day.
My Project
My students look forward to our daily mindfulness practice. After recess we pause, practice and breathe. These materials including yoga mats, chimes and a singing bowl for meditation along with books that teach mindfulness such as Anh's Anger, Mindful Movements and Meditation is an Open Sky, will help me to expand the mindfulness practices I can bring to my students.
We also will begin to add yoga to our practice. These exercises will help my students to be able to be ready to face the emotional and academic challenges of their school day in a positive manner.

They will build strategies to help them to learn how to cope with set backs and challenges. These skills will follow them throughout their lives. No matter where they are, and no matter what challenges they face, they will be able to find their own personal still and quiet place.
