Microscopic Marvels - Viewing Cells Through the Microscope

My students need current microscopes to view cells and some organelles.

My Students

We are part of a rural school district with a large number of students on free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Many of my students have not traveled and have had limited opportunities to engage in unique experiences. And several of my students don't yet speak English.

In these circumstances, sometimes experience is the best teacher.

My students are eager to experience science and the world around them. While my seventh graders strive to make friends and be a part of a social network of people, they also display a genuine excitement when new concepts and experiences pique their interest.

My Project

By seventh grade, most of our students have never looked through a microscope. However, as we study life science, students will be learning about cells. Microscopes help seventh graders really grasp the concept of cells, which are too small to see otherwise. Students will learn the parts of the microscope, how the image is "altered" when viewing through the microscope, and how to calculate magnification.

Students will then use the microscopes to see first-hand what cells actually look like.

They will view plant and animal cells. They will see cell membranes, cell walls, nuclei, and, potentially, other organelles. Once my students fully understand cells and organelles, we will learn about the organization of life, genetics, and ecology. This unit about cells, with the use of microscopes, will be the foundation upon which our school year of life science will be built.
