I am excited that I will be teaching first grade this year. Several of my first graders were in my kindergarten class so I am well aware of their potential and zest for learning. I am also aware that many of my students will start the school year without basic school supplies.
The very items that so many of us take for granted and assume that children will have on the first day of school are the very items that my students are in need of.
My students are bright, bubbly, and have a thirst for knowledge that should not be stifled because they don't have notebooks, pencils, folders, station envelopes, glue sticks and/or construction paper. Many times the parents are able to supply a few of the items but not all.
My Project
These very basic supplies are the tools necessary for their academic success. The new Common Core State Standards are demanding. My students cannot afford to not have their full focus on the instruction at hand. But they also need the tools and resources to support their learning. Yes, this is the age of technology but in the primary classroom we do not underestimate the power of a notebook and a pencil. They are used every single day, and are magical!
Think back to when your parents took you school shopping.
I know I remember the smell of brand new crayons, the feel and look of the crisp, clean pages in my brand new notebooks, how my neatly sharpened pencils looked all lined up in a row. As small as those items may be they played a big role in me being excited about going to school. Please help my students experience that same excitement by donating crayons, pencils, notebooks, and other essential supplies though this proposal request.
