My students need an array of math resources that include manipulatives like 3D geometric shapes. They also need games like Flip It! multiplication, geometry, and addition/subtraction. The power pens will be used with the power pen math quiz cards. Last, they need books for improvement in different math skills, including How Much Is a Million? If You Were a Polygon, and Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream.
"Mathematics may not teach us how to add love or minus hate. But it gives us every reason to hope that every problem has a solution" - Author unknown
My students are truly one of a kind!
They are each so unique and creative with a strong desire to learn. They try very hard to be successful and not let their home life get in the way of their experiences at school. They are very promising students with a great future in front of them.
We are a Title I school, with more than 80% of our students on free and reduced price lunches due to economic hardships. A majority of our students are primarily English Language Learners and they do not have the opportunity to speak or gain additional support in learning English at home.
We are also a looping school, which means we get to have the same students two years in a row. In having this experience, we not only develop a deeper relationship with our students, but also with their families. I believe that this "looping" system is so important for their education because we are all having a part in learning to work together and trusting each other while creating lifelong memories.
My Project
I am focused on trying to meet the needs of each learner in my room. During math we are all mathematicians no matter what skill set you have or are working towards. Our math time is based on a rotation model where we all begin together learning the lesson and then break out into three 15 minute rotation groups. The members of groups are constantly changing with each new skill being taught for the first time or rediscovering skills from previous lessons.
The rotations for my mathematicians include: "Mathematicians Unite" where they meet with me and we work together to problem solve through our lesson or math picture books with various math tools. "Games and Activities" is where the students are able to work together through different activities and games based on the lesson or skills previously taught. The last rotation is "Math Recharge" where the students are applying what they know to solve problems either on their own or as members of their group.
Donations made for these requested resources will provide my students with a variety of ways to enhance, practice, and refine their various math skills.
They will be working together every single day to solve problems and develop a deeper understanding, all while being engaged and having fun!
