Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many educators have shifted their teaching practices towards test prep and drilling mathematical knowledge on rote memorization. Empirical research has shown that such methods are not effective methods and are not creating critical thinkers; more importantly they are not in any way fun for kids.

My Second grade students come from an urban low SES Hispanic community in South LA.

92% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. My students range in reading levels from beginning K to being on grade level. The majority of our students families speak Spanish at home, therefore as educators we have to be very strategic and innovative with our pedagogical practices. Our school is focused on creating inquiry based experiences for students to add to their funds of knowledge,(student centered) and equip them with more visuals/reference tools so that they can find the answers and investigate for themselves versus drilling and teaching to the test. For many of our students school is the only consistent thing in their lives, some come from single family households or have never met their fathers'. At times their situations can be most depressing, but they count on us to ensure that they will attend college someday, and we are here to fulfill that promise to them.

My Project

With these math resources my students will become the investigators in the process of doing math, learning via social interaction. As the educator I can step back and become the facilitator of learning; where students are empowered to investigate and are immersed in a learning environment that reveals learning rather than just answers, they will be able to transcend knowledge with these resources. I plan to use them during our math workstation time so that learning becomes based on participatory knowledge and therefore the focus can become a process of inquiry in which students are learning by doing as well as learning about learning.

Being English Language learners, these tools are invaluable resources which will enable them to develop their academic language skills.

ELL case studies have shown that instructional methods/practices can have a significant impact on student achievement. Increasing comprehensible input enables students to turn receptive knowledge into expressive knowledge. That is the goal of our mission to mastery, and we believe our students can achieve above and any expectations, please we need your support
