Math Success With Small Groups

My students need a new small group table that will not fall over when they work, and resources to use in learning zones to reinforce what we are studying.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our current small group table is too small! We end up crowding around the table which is also broken. Randomly during the day, the leg will come off, and the table will fall over. We also have a very limited number of activities to use in our learning zone centers while others are in groups.

Most of our students come from very high poverty.

Many of them are caring for younger siblings while still being children themselves. My students are not concerned with what career they should aspire to or even where they should go to college. Many times, they are more concerned if there will be dinner on the table or if all the members of their family will return home that night. Often times, students ask to stay after school so they can delay facing the hard reality at home for even another hour. School is a safe place to them- even if it is the only one they have. My students are eager to learn and involve their families in their journeys. They learn best by doing because they don't have the background knowledge to connect the information given to them in traditional lecture form. Our school ranges from PreK for 3 year olds up to 6th grade so many students have siblings at school. When an older sibling is inspired, it trickles down ultimately reaching every grade level.

My Project

With a better environment for small group time, students will be able to get individualized assistance and instruction on the areas they need the most. Math will be something that is meaningful and applicable to their lives, not just a class they have to take. My students love to play games, to hear them talking about math while playing is a wonderful way for them to learn. However, we only have games that cover a few topics, not the varied concepts that must be mastered to be successful in future math classes such as algebra. Math can be the class that students look forward to the most.

Mastery of math concepts is essential for student success.

These materials can make math an enjoyable experience for my students. They will be able to apply knowledge of math concepts to real life and have their individual needs met. This project could help build a strong foundation in math to support my students for the rest of their lives.
