My students need math and science hot dot sets to review learned concepts throughout the year to improve their retention. They also need great literature that they love!
I have a great group of kiddos this year. They are really digging into, and through, our classroom library and are eager for more graphic novels. Every two weeks each student gets to search through our library to pick five books to keep for the next two weeks.
My students have loads of potential and my goal is to help them reach their potential through whatever means necessary.
The large majority of my students come from low-income families where they aren't always able to afford luxuries like books and study tools. My goal through this project is to get great literature into their hands and to help them review math and science material they've already learned throughout the year so that by the time they enter fourth grade, they do so with big, giant, overflowing math and science brains.
My Project
My students need Hot Dots, Brain Quest and new books. My students will use the books I've requested during any free time and as an early finisher option. As the year goes on and my students learn how to care for books, they will also get to check our classroom library books out and take them home for nights and weekends. We plan on using the Hot Dots and Brain Quest activities as part of our guided math and science stations. Students will use them during independent station time to practice previously learned skills in order to maintain retention.
When I bring new books into our classroom, I do so through a book raffle.
Students get to put their name in for the book they want to read the most. I will pull names and hand out books to students and then create "Waiting for a Good Book" sheets that record which student is next in line for which books. This really lights a fire under my students and motivates them to read. It also introduces them to books that they may not have chosen otherwise and gets the book talk and recommendations going.
