Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math builds upon itself; to successfully measure the area of a pool, students first must be able to multiply the length and width. Math manipulatives build upon students' interest in elementary math so that one day, they have the opportunity to become an architect, engineer, or accountant.

My students are academically curious and eager 3rd graders filled with potential, but they are also limited by their lack of resources.

They come from a low-income neighborhood in Texas, which reduces their opportunity to encounter hands-on learning experiences and outside materials. They are bright young minds that are increasingly curious about the world around them and the new resources that within our classroom. Centers are one of the students’ favorite times because they give students an opportunity to explore new and exciting concepts in a hands-on manner. These students are just beginning their journey towards a future that they are creating for themselves within the classroom. They cannot wait to get their hands on exciting new materials that will encourage these lifelong learners to continue working towards their goals.

My Project

My students need math manipulatives, such as play money, fraction pieces, dice, dominoes, base ten blocks, and other such hands-on material to bring math to life. These resources will give students the opportunity to explore mathematics in a more complex, exciting way. Students will see math come alive before their eyes. They will become architects or painters while creating patterns and observing lines of symmetry. They will think like chefs and pizza makers when building their own fractions and see the relationship between fourths and eights. They will have the opportunity to become entrepreneurs, owning their own restaurant or retail store, while learning about the exchange of money with addition and subtraction of goods.

These manipulatives will give students a real life application for abstract mathematical concepts that will allow them to understand the relevance and how these concepts may play a large role in their career of choice one day, bringing them one step closer to their vision of a successful future and unlimited potential.
