Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are excited about Algebra 1 and Pre-Calculus. They are challenged academically and expect to be asked a lot of Why? questions. One of my goals is to help my students develop critical thinking, and appreciate the importance of Math in real life.
My students are freshmen and juniors and they are very motivated and inquisitive.
They are smart, funny, curious, and talented over-achievers with leadership qualities. They work well as a group, taking team work to a very high level.
Our school is a college preparatory high school and my students are thinking about Math applications and future careers. They are interested in knowing how Math can be applied in their lives practically.
Most parents of our students are immigrants, and many of our students would be the first in their families to graduate from high school. Although they come from high poverty backgrounds, these students believe in themselves and see themselves as working in Math related professions.
My Project
The equipment needed for this project are:
1)Theodolite used to measure vertical and horizontal angles
2) Automatic level and leveling staff used to determine relative heights of points on the ground
3) 300ft measuring tape used to measure distance
These equipment are for outdoor angular and distance measurements. The data obtained from the angle and distance measurements will be analyzed employing algebraic and trigonometric principles that my students encounter in their study of Algebra and Pre-Calculus.
A survey of our school will be undertaken with buildings and other landmarks precisely located on the final survey plan. This project will provide vital insight into the application of Math principles that usually appear to be very abstract. The final survey plan will be produced in the classroom using engineering drawing equipment. As part of this project, students will learn how to draw survey plans.
It is anticipated that as a result of this project, the students' view of Math will change for the better and,in some cases, drastically enough to challenge them to consider STEM-based professions.
Some of the things that will come out of this project are:
Boundary survey plan of our school, topographic map of our school,
and the use of industry-specific technology including theodolite and automatic level.
