Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th graders are excited and motivated at the start of the year, but most of them (85%) come from very poor families. The cost of materials can be a real hardship and many of my kids do without the things we need in our classroom.
I teach 90 students in three 8th grade classes in what is considered an 'economically-disadvantaged' middle school.
Extra money is not something that my students and their parents/guardians regularly have, if ever. I try to make my school supply list very short, knowing that I will eventually end up buying notebooks, pencils, scissors, and basic classroom supplies out of my own pocket to help out some students. I cannot "require" my students to continually purchase additional supplies as they dwindle, get dull, break, and become misplaced as middle school kids just lose things. These supplies will help all of my kids to be able to do their best. We have a dynamic classroom, where kids use post-its to make notes, provide feedback and they regularly present their ideas on the board for the rest of the class.
My Project
With a consistent supply of classroom basics, my students have the tools they need to start the school year right. I am requesting pens, pencils, markers, paper, scissors and highlighters, all of which will serve my students in the creation of their writing portfolios for high school. They also need printer paper to print off their work in class – none of these materials are provided by our school and must come from either me or my students’ families.
When my students have consistent access to basic supplies, their outlook will be positively affected in that they will be empowered to start strong and to do their best work in the year ahead. They will be able to express their unique selves artistically and show their classmates examples of their hard work and dedication. Kids shine when they have the right tools to do the job and they shrink a bit when they don’t. Please help my students to be their best by giving them the basics that they would otherwise never have.
Kids shine when they have the right tools to do the job in the classroom.
With these supplies, kids will have quality materials to do their work and to present their ideas.
Please help my students to be their best by giving them the quality classroom tools that simply wouldn't have without your help.
