My students need books to learn about Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender, and Queer History. Titles include: "The Gay Metropolis," "The Emerging Lesbian," and "Coyote Nation."
My students and I have been given a great gift from my supportive administration. Next year, I will be offering an elective course in Queer (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) History. This course is the first of its kind for my district, and we need some resources to make it work.
My students represent a good mix of the diversity that learning in a modern, urban, public high school has to offer.
We represent a variety of backgrounds (ethnic, religious, citizenship, economic, etc.). Thanks to our amazing students, our school is often highly ranked (locally, statewide, and even nationwide) in terms of achievement in academics, sports, and extracurricular activities. These students are inspiring, and they definitely have great plans to make our future world a better one.
My Project
The intent behind this new Queer History course is, first and foremost, to help students engage in history. Students will explore the major political, social, economic, and technological patterns of the times. However, the course will focus specifically on how these patterns were influenced by LGBT individuals, as well as how LGBT identity was shaped and reshaped by the patterns. Books like "Hospital Time," and others, will give students the chance to explore the experience of hospital staff during the start of the AIDS crisis. Films like "Coming Out Under Fire" will bring students face-to-digital-face with LGBT individuals who served their country during WWII. Identity is formed by being part of the shared narrative, a common history. All students need to see, even if they do not take the course, that Queer History is a part of history worthy of examination. But in particular, LGBT students need to see that they, too, have a voice and are a part of the great narrative of history.
"Democracy requires tolerance, fairness and an informed citizenry." LGBT issues are constantly in the news and discussed in the media, in the hallways, and around the dinner table.
Students should understand the historic roots of the modern historical movements if they are going to be able to understand and dialog intelligently about these issues, not to mention the fact that LGBT rights are a GLOBAL struggle now. Students need to understand that reality to be prepared for global citizenship.
